The short answer
CoolVantage repairs central AC, heat pumps, and ductless systems in Cupertino homes. We diagnose the actual cause, whether that's a failed capacitor, a refrigerant leak, a frozen coil, or a drainage problem, and explain your repair and replacement options before doing any work.
When your air conditioner stops keeping up on a warm Cupertino afternoon, you want to know what's wrong, what it will take to fix, and whether the system is worth repairing. CoolVantage Heating & Cooling repairs central air conditioners, heat pumps, and ductless systems in homes throughout Cupertino (ZIP 95014). Our base in San Jose is about 10 miles east of the city. We find the cause, explain it in plain terms, and give you the options before any work starts.
AC Problems We Commonly Fix in Cupertino Homes
The Santa Clara Valley has dry summers and mild, damp winters. Many Cupertino homes run their air conditioning hard for part of the year and barely touch it the rest. Systems that sit idle for months and then work through a stretch of hot days tend to show the same kinds of problems.
These are the issues we're called about most often:
- The system runs, but the air from the vents is warm or only slightly cool
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin, or it won't start at all
- Short cycling, where the system turns on and off every few minutes
- Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil
- Water pooling near the indoor unit or furnace, often from a clogged condensate drain
- A tripped breaker every time the AC kicks on
- Grinding, squealing, or rattling from the outdoor unit or the blower
- Rooms on one floor staying much warmer than the rest of the house
What Happens During a Repair Visit
We start by asking what you've noticed: when the problem began, what the system sounds like, and whether it's gotten worse. Then we check the whole system, not just the part that seems to be failing. That includes the thermostat and its settings, the electrical components in the outdoor unit, refrigerant pressures and temperatures, the indoor coil and blower, the filter, and the condensate drain.
A failed capacitor or contactor is often a straightforward fix. A refrigerant leak takes more work. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak only puts off the next breakdown, so we look for the source and tell you what it would take to repair it. Before we start, you'll get a clear explanation of the problem and the cost of the repair we recommend. You decide how to proceed.
Repair or Replace? Getting a Straight Answer
Most AC problems are worth repairing. Replacement becomes worth talking about when the system needs a major component like a compressor, when it has a leak that keeps coming back, or when it has struggled to cool the house for several summers. If we think replacement makes more sense, we'll say so and explain why. We won't push you toward new equipment you don't need.
If you're weighing replacement, it helps to know the local and federal picture. Under Bay Area Air District rules, gas furnaces made from 2029 on must meet a zero-NOx standard. In practice, that points homeowners toward heat pumps when a furnace is replaced after that date. A heat pump handles both cooling and heating, so some Cupertino homeowners replace an aging AC and furnace together. These rules don't require you to replace working equipment. They apply only when a furnace fails or is replaced.
The federal 25C tax credit for heat pumps applied only to systems placed in service before December 31, 2025, so it isn't available for new installations. BayREN and your local clean energy provider may offer heat pump incentives. Amounts and availability change with each funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before including it in a quote.
Quick Checks Before You Schedule Service
A few simple checks can save you a service call or help us diagnose the problem faster:
- Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and the set temperature is below the current room temperature
- Replace the batteries if your thermostat uses them
- Check the breakers for both the indoor and outdoor units
- Look at the air filter and replace it if it's dirty
- Clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit
- If you see ice, turn the system off and let it thaw. Running it frozen can damage the compressor
